On Draining the Swamp
I remember one of Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign promises “I’m going to drain the swamp in D.C” (loosely paraphrased). Although I had no idea what or how big that swamp was, I voted for cleaning it out.
When I expected Trump to pull the plug and like a huge bathtub, the swamp would simply drain, it didn’t. In fact there were creatures and debris blocking the proverbial drain. Not only that, but they were fighting back, tooth and nail trying to keep the drain closed.
In the years since that initial campaign promise we’ve learned that any attempt to reform the government or it’s multitude of programs is met with fierce resistance from all sides. Even when you cut the head off a rattlesnake the body keeps thrashing about and although separated the head is still deadly.
I wish that during his administration when President Obama (former US Senator) and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton (former first lady & former US senator) used private servers and the wide open internet to communicate sensitive information off-line instead of secure government servers (as required by protocol) those same people would hold them accountable for putting national security at risk and the loosing of Hillary’s 34,000+ emails after scrubbing her equipment. Did they not realize that once something is put on the internet it never disappears or goes away due to the multiple internet server backups that take place daily, weekly or monthly?
I also wish that when government fraud, waste or abuse is uncovered (like when D.O.G.E. audited government agencies) the proverbial financial hole would be plugged, finances would cease to be paid out and that money recalled back into the government treasury while those responsible and those illegally receiving government funds would be held criminally liable and prosecuted.
When it is reported that President Trump is going after his political foes it is basically true because they are swimming around in the swamp he is draining. More importantly when wrongdoing is uncovered by DOJ investigations, should prosecution not follow?
Soldiers go into battle fully understanding that those beside them are the friendlies and those in front the enemy and they have the support of those behind. Be mindful of where you place yourself. – RTM
