Labor Day in America

So what is Labor Day and why do we celebrate it nationally?

According to Wikipedia the first Monday of September is celebrated honoring and recognizing the American labor movement and the works and contributions of laborers to the development and achievements in the United States. Labor Day was first proposed in the early 1880s.

P.J. McGuire is frequently credited as the father of Labor Day in the United States. McGuire while visiting Toronto, Canada saw parades in 1882 and proposed a parade be held in New York City followed by a picnic, which local unions could sell tickets as a fundraiser. Local labor leaders were featured as speakers. Sunday preceding Labor Day was to be Labor Sunday dedicated to spiritual and educational aspects of the labor movement.

Oregon was the first stated to make Labor Day an official public holiday in 1887. By 1894 thirty states were already celebrating Labor Day, soon Congress passed a bill and President Grover Cleveland signed the bill into law on June 28yj making it a holiday for federal workers. By the 1930s unions were encouraging workers to strike to make sure they got the day off. All states and D.C. have made labor Day a statutory holiday.

Labor Day is called the “unofficial end of summer”. Many school districts resume classes around the Labor Day holiday weekend and have become an important weekend for discounts by many retailers and seen as the largest sale dates of the year, second only to Christmas season’s Black Friday.

Isn’t it a bit overly hypocritical that Labor Day traditionally isn’t a day of work (Labor Day – no work day), much like Teachers Work Days where students are given a days off from learning while Clergy work only on Sundays?

There are too many willing to argue without merit and I would be remiss attempting to argue against their ignorance, they have way too much experience. My writings are my personal opinion intended to be educational in nature, a bit humorous, satirical, while being informative providing food for thought, which is sorely lacking today.
