Memorial Day in America

Memorial Day in America

While watching a televised interview of former Pastor, Army Chaplain and current VA Secretary Doug Collins he said it better than I could.  “When conducting services for a lost service member I often say we don’t celebrate their death, but that they lived. (Paraphrased)

I urge everyone not to wish “Happy Memorial Day” as the loss of one military service member (active, reserve or national guard) is not a happy occasion for the teammates, family or friends.

Among America’s current national holidays that honor our military there is often confusion over Memorial Day and Veterans Day (VA):

Memorial Day (last Monday in May), military personnel who died in the service of their country (particularly in battle or as a result of wounds sustained in battle

Veterans Day (11am, November 11th), (originally Armistice Day end of WWI) 1918, to thank and honor all those who served in the military (living and dead) who sacrificed and have done their duty in the United States Armed Forces – RTM.
