The Blackklansman Connection
From visionary filmmaker Spike Lee comes the incredible true story of an American hero. It’s the early 1970s, and Ron Stallworth (John David Washington) is the first African-American detective to serve in the Colorado Springs Police Department.
No this article is not a movie review. I haven’t seen the movie, but if you’ve watched the commercials or have gone to the theatre you might be interested to know as Paul Harvey would say, “The Rest of the Story”, well at least how the KKK, the CSPD and I are connected (I don’t have a mug shot or prints of file with them) but………..
I came to Colorado Springs the first time in 1977 at was stationed at Fort Carson. I was assigned to an Army transportation company that also supplied personnel to staff the transportation motor pool. I never made it to the TMP but one of our soldiers was the driver who decided to “branch out” and started a local chapter of the KKK where he became the “Grand Wizard” of the Colorado Springs chapter.
I remember one time that someone called into a local television station to their “tip line” saying that they were the company commander of our transportation company and could come out to the post and conduct an interview with the “Grand Wizard”.
My memory is a bit fuzzy on this, but faster than Superman changing in a phone booth the van was at the “B” Street gate wanting admittance. A quick phone call to the company commander confirmed that access would not to be granted.
After that phone call it was learned who the soldier was who worked in the TMP and he was given a Chapter 13 discharge “for the good of the service” and removed from the post. I don’t know what happened after that, because I was drafted to become an army recruiter and went to California.
I never heard from or about that soldier after that, but I do know that the company commander at the time is now a retired army officer who lives in the Colorado Springs area, not too far away.
